Got a small bathroom but don’t want to compromise on style and functionality? When it comes to designing for bathroom sizes – sometimes as little as two to three square metres – creating a classy, on-trend yet functional bathing space can be a challenge!
Here’s a project that faced the same challenge, with a few great ideas that made a huge difference to the family living in this home, in terms of both style and experience.
One of the most common desires of those with a small bathing space is the need for a bath, especially for families with children.
A bath was a “must have” in this bathroom, which turned an everyday bathroom into a luxurious master bathroom exuding sybaritic indulgence. This deeply relaxing hydrotherapy spa bath ticked all the boxes, and when paired with a mixture of Crystal Glass Loft Black subway tiles and large format black Mek Dark tiles, creates an Insta-worthy bathing space!
When designing your compact bathroom, the more floor area that is visible the greater the perception of space. A wall hung vanity and toilet are both excellent inclusions to achieve this effect.
This bathroom features the innovative Terrace basin with matching wall mounted cabinet, incorporating spacious natural oak integrated storage drawers. Designed by the Jacob Delafon team in France, the Terrace includes the unique “Free Drain” system which is hands free drainage – no centre waste hole required, nor the need to put your hands into the water.

In 2018 the William Inglis Hotel, MGallery by Sofitel – a five-star boutique lodging opened in Sydney, forming part of the new $140m precinct developed by thoroughbred horse sales company William Inglis & Son Ltd and operated by the multinational hotel Group Accor Hotels, called Riverside Stables.
Riverside Stables is set across eight levels and features 144 guest rooms – each personalised to the champion racehorse it is named after – and offers a host of hospitality and leisure facilities. Each room includes artwork of the relevant racehorse and associated winning jockey silks.
Kohler was exclusively selected by design studio Chada to provide bathroom sanitary ware products including tapware, toilets and showering tapware, showcasing the timeless Purist range in stunning PVD Brushed Bronze.
Guests staying at the new property can enjoy world-class hospitality facilities onsite including the all-day dining paddock-to-plate restaurant Newmarket Room, headed up by chef Samuel Bull. The menu focuses on robust food with rural soul but refined elegance – the perfect complement to the Warwick Farm precinct, celebrating racing history and the thoroughbred industry.
There is also a stunning rooftop bar and pool deck atop the hotel lined with cabanas and sun loungers overlooking 300 acres of greenery.
As part of the hotel’s new marketing initiative the William Inglis Hotel, MGallery by Sofitel last week launched a program called “Inspired by Her”, a new hotel initiative designed specifically for women.
The program will see high quality hairdryers, bathroom lighting, makeup mirrors and other feminine amenities introduced to all bathrooms in MGallery hotels around the Pacific, to meet the needs of travelling women.
MGallery by Sofitel recently worked with a global marketing research company to conduct an in-depth survey to understand guests’ habits and what they want to see and experience in hotels. The survey found that 86 per cent of female travellers wanted a hospitality program designed specifically for them.
Australian international model, photographer and Inspired by Her ambassador, Candice Lake, flew in from London for the event ahead of Sydney Fashion Week, to speak on the Inspired by Her program and why it is so important to cater to the needs of travelling women.
Held in the big barn at the new hotel, guests of the intimate lunch were given an insight into Candice’s life as an in-demand photographer and her thoughts on what makes a hotel a great hotel.
“Having those thoughtful extras in a hotel such as great bathroom lighting, quality high powered hairdryers and emergency kits which have items such as stockings, hair ties, nail polish remover and moisturiser turns a good hotel into a great hotel, and one that you want to keep coming back to. It is always a pleasure when I know I am travelling to a destination where there is a MGallery by Sofitel hotel and it has been wonderful learning more about brand.”

Owned and developed by Shayher Group and displaying the distinctive design style of renowned interior design studio Nic Graham & Associates, Nic himself has worked on a number of W properties and tells us that each project always starts with a detailed narrative that is guided by the W Brand protocol. Key DNA touch points are addressed based on location and the key story for W Brisbane was ‘A River Dreaming’, an indigenous-based narrative of the Brisbane river.
Nic and his team tapped into Brisbane’s history, culture and key social aspects that support the brand goals of providing an engaging hotel experience from Food and Beverage through to each guests stay. They touched on the river and the effects on the landscape, the floods, the Queenslander heritage, flora, fauna, Australiana and Brisvegas.
“We were excited about the opportunity to weave an Australian narrative into this international brand that is so focused on design and modern culture.” says Nic.
This theme is apparent in every nook and corner of the hotel from the lobby to the dining venues, the unmissable pool, spa, and each and every glamorous room. Images and analogies of the river, its waves, and ripples pop up in various subtle and not so subtle colours at every corner of the property.
Mirrored ceilings and strong horizontal forms inspired by the river banks of Brisbane feature throughout, and wall graphics created in collaboration with Fabio Ongarato pay homage to the arts district that is located nearby while art installations by Australian artists including John Nicholson, Lucas Grogan, and Reko Rennie give it a special touch and complete the picture.
Re-entering the Australian market and Brisbane, in particular, was perfect timing for the Marriott International group as the city is growing rapidly and morphing into a more mature metropole. The year-around sunshine and the outdoor lifestyle attracts guests and travellers looking for luxurious experiences and mini-adventures, all of which they are bound to find in this property.

Introducing the Veil Wall Faced IntelligentToilet
The release of Kohler’s Veil intelligent toilet, in a wall faced design, is the ultimate pairing of pure, ergonomic design and customised personal cleansing, operated via a touchscreen LCD remote control. The fluid, balanced curves and minimalist design of the Veil Wall Faced intelligent toilet contain some of the most advanced features in optimal toilet hygiene and individual comfort.
Every aspect of the Veil toilet experience is hands free – including an auto, touch-less flush – with a focus on absolute comfort. The cover and ergonomically designed seat are motion-activated while the temperature of the heated seat can be adjusted for optimal comfort. And for total peace of mind, the bowl can be LED lit for night time visits.
Combining both a toilet and a modern-day bidet, the Veil’s advanced personal cleansing functions can be customised for water temperature; spray style, position and pressure; plus pulsate and oscillate functions. The precision air dryer can also be adjusted to personal preferences for temperature.
On sitting down, a fan is activated which draws air from the toilet bowl through a carbon filter to remove odours and help keep the bathroom fresh.
In line with the hands-free design of the Veil – which sports an uber-hygienic rimless bowl – the wand is self-cleaning, using UV light and electrolysed water systems to sanitise its surfaces every 24 hours, which can be pre-set by the owner/user at the point of installation.
The Veil wall faced intelligent toilet, is a compact toilet with elongated bowl and French curve seat for added room and comfort. It features an in-wall fully concealed cistern with a 3/4.5L flush.
The Veil is also available in a wall hung configuration.
It is hard to believe that more than 2 billion people have no access to safe water* in our privileged environments – where food, power and water are everyday staples. It was this fact that inspired Kohler to develop CLARITY, a simple, affordable filtration system that can provide safe drinking water for those living in remote areas with no access to clean water.
Kohler Clarity – the safe water filtration system
CLARITY is yet another step in the company’s ongoing commitment to global health and sustainability. A table-top ceramic filtration system, CLARITY was developed by Kohler in partnership with World Vision, iDE and Water Mission. It can produce 40 litres of safe drinking water a day – enough for a small family.
The cornerstones of the design are that it be simple to use and maintain, inexpensive to acquire and run and easy to transport in some of the most remote and rugged terrains in the world.
CLARITY, a ceramic filtration system, removes more than 99 per cent of bacteria and protozoa from 11 litres of water every two hours.
Contaminated or dirty water is placed in the reservoir at the top of the unit which then uses gravity to filter down to the storage reservoir below. The clean water can be kept safely in this reservoir and accessed by tap.
The filter cartridge contains some silver, for its antimicrobial properties, and is cleaned simply by rubbing gently with sandpaper to remove any sediment build-up. Each cartridge will filter up to 5000 litres of water before replacement is required.
Enormous thought has been put into the environments and communities in which CLARITY will be used – the lid, for example, is embossed with pictographic instructions in consideration of those who are illiterate.
Transport can also be an expensive and difficult process in more remote areas – so both the CLARITY unit and its packaging has been designed to be as lightweight as possible. One truckload of CLARITY filtration systems will contain 3600 units – enough for about 14, 400 people.
The easy to assemble and use CLARITY filtration unit stands about 60cms tall and weighs just 2.5 kg – and meets WHO standards for safe drinking water.
The CLARITY has already been used in disaster relief efforts for Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria. Given that statistics suggest the incidence of water-borne illnesses can be reduced by 45 per cent through safe drinking water, and safe storage, the CLARITY is a life-changing development.
The Kohler CLARITY project has been a truly multicultural affair having been designed by a Kohler team in the UK, engineered by a Kohler team in India and produced in Kohler’s US factory.
At a local level, Kohler holds permanent stocks of the CLARITY in its Kohler NZ warehouse in preparation for a rapid response should there be further disasters in its regional South Pacific islands.

Other sustainability projects: Reinvent the Toilet Challenge – the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
Kohler has had an ongoing passion and commitment to utilise its high-end design and technology skills to make change for ALL, especially those who have less. Having joined the Bill Gates Foundation, Kohler partnered with the California Institute of Technology in 2012 to develop a photo-voltaic toilet to provide a sustainable sanitation option to the 2.5 billion people around the world who don’t have safe sanitation.

A residential developer situated north of Auckland in New Zealand, has used a lifetime of experience and architectural passion to create his own family home in the lush rural countryside of Dairy Flat.
Calling on the expertise of local architect Alistair Dodds and interior designer Shannon Pepper, the owner’s brief was to create a two-storey family home for the couple and their two children. Key to his ‘dream home’ was a master bedroom with accompanying theatre room and a large, open-plan living area to take full advantage of a proposed water feature.
The owner’s favourite colour palette of black and white is in evidence throughout the home, as is his love of modernist, highly functional design. The living space has six metre ceilings and full-length glass walls, while the swimming pool has been placed under the roof, to enable year round use.
Bathrooms featuring KOHLER
There are four bathrooms in the home, each showcasing a black and white colour palette together with KOHLER’s sleek award-winning* Avid* tapware in a beautiful PVD Titanium finish. A different look is achieved in each bathing space with the clever use of texture and pattern in tiles and finishes.
The luxurious master bathroom exudes sybaritic indulgence – from the deeply relaxing hydrotherapy spa bath to the statuesque 1500mm Terrace vanity with double vitreous china basins and unique ‘FreeDrain’ waste system plus spacious natural oak integrated storage drawers. The all black bathroom achieves plenty of light reflection with the clever mix of Crystal Glass Loft Black subway tiles in a combination of high gloss and textured finishes while the large scale black Mek Dark wall tiles are finished with white grout. Kohler Co and Virginia tech are celebrating a major win at the 2018 Solar Decathlon, held for the first time in Dubai, UAE.
“FutureHAUS” is a unique solar home designed and built by Virginia Tech research university, with the support and technical input of Kohler Co in the US. Beating 27 other universities from 11 countries, the FutureHas Virginia Tech team had just two weeks to build its prototype FutureHAUS house, that runs exclusively on solar power, in a public expo area next to the Mohammad Bin Rashid Solar Park.
The goal of the competition was to create a high performing solar home – seen as the smart, sustainable housing of the future – able to function in the extreme climatic conditions of the Middle East. A key requirement was that it had to be able to be mass produced in similar communities around the world.
True Aging in Place
FutureHAUS makes it possible for a family to theoretically stay in the same house for life and have the home grow and change with them.
“We’re demonstrating how a house can automatically adapt to the needs of every individual who lives in it,” said Joseph Wheeler, lead of the FutureHAUS project, as well as a professor of architecture in the School of Architecture + Design and co-director of the Center for Design Research at Virginia Tech.
Kohler worked with Virginia Tech for two years advising on design and technical attributes that could achieve high functioning, smart solutions for both kitchen and bathroom.
The winning FutureHAUS, that enabled Virginia Tech to take home the $250,000 first prize, utilised factory-built cartridges to create living spaces that adapt to their inhabitants. Kohler provided technical advice and guidance on the water delivery system in the kitchen where metered amounts of water are delivered via voice control.
In the main bathroom the vanity top is 3D printed and utilises Kohler’s technological expertise to incorporate three sensors within the basin that employ the company’s Response touchless technology. Kohler has then coupled these sensors to three of its DTV digital showering systems.
What is the Solar Decathlon?
In it’s 16th year, the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon is a collegiate competition, comprising 10 contests, that challenges student teams to design and build highly efficient and innovative buildings powered by renewable energy.
Virginia Tech was the only team from the US to compete in this year’s Solar Decathlon. The prototype houses were judged on 10 criteria: architecture, engineering and construction, energy management, comfort conditions, house functioning, sustainable transportation, sustainability, communications and innovation.
The Solar Decathlon supports Dubai’s stated goal to have the smallest carbon footprint of any global city by 2050.
Lush green foliage is an excellent way to soften the hard, straight lines that so often proliferate in a bathroom – think tiles, vanities, mirrors, windows, shower recesses etc
Just a single plant, from a fern to a succulent, will introduce a pleasing, relaxing ambience to the bathing space – but there are other benefits to including living greenery in the bathroom. Clean air and health!
Indoor air can be more polluted than the air outside, as bathrooms, by their very nature, contain many chemicals – from those emitted by surface materials to shampoos, soaps and chemical cleaners.
Plants are the perfect ‘green’ way of improving the quality of the air – they require little effort and negate the need for an expensive air purifier.
Experts at NASA have spent time identifying the best indoor plants for removing toxins – but make sure the plant you choose is also the best suited to your bathroom’s light conditions, temperatures and any draughts.
Here are six plants, recommended by NASA for removing air-borne toxins, that could be grown in the bathroom:
Keep them fairly dry and grow in indirect light. Fertilise during growing season. One of the easiest indoor plants to grow.
GOLDEN CANE PALM
Requires plenty of light and a good balance of moisture, fertiliser and warmth. Brings a tropical lushness to the bathroom.
(Aloe barbadensis mill)
Grow in indirect sunlight in a dry soil (like a cactus potting mix). Water during growing period but never allow to stand in wet soil (ensure pot has plenty of drainage holes). The leaves contain a gel that can be used on skin conditions and superficial cuts for its soothing, antimicrobial properties.
An easy plant to grow indoors and can be planted in hanging baskets to allow the leaves to cascade or can be trained to climb a stick or pole. Can tolerate lower light and requires a cool environment and a reasonable amount of water.
(Spathiphyllum mauna loa)
Grow in a warm spot away from direct sunlight – it will tolerate low levels of light. Water regularly so that the potting mix is moist at all times. Yellow leaves mean it is receiving too much light.
Will tolerate low to bright light conditions but keep away from direct sunlight. Requires minimal watering. Very hardy plants that even enjoy being pot bound!
Just one plant will make a difference to both the ambience and the air purity in your bathroom – but think about groups of plants, perhaps in a corner of the floor, or suspended from the ceiling in baskets.
Be prepared for a little trial and error initially, while you work out the plants that are happiest in the conditions that prevail in your bathing space.
Dark and moody colour palettes on-trend
A deeper, bolder colour palette in bathroom design is the result of a significant cultural shift, according to one of the world’s leading trends forecasters.
Li Edelkoort, renowned for her long-term global trends forecasts, delivered some shape-shifting insights into colour and texture in a highly anticipated workshop with Caesarstone quartz surfaces earlier this year (2018).
Illustrating the increasingly dramatic colours being used in bathrooms, Edelkoort explained that interior design is no longer a culture that tries to imitate nature but rather take inspiration from it.
Bathrooms, for example, will take their cue from carbon fibre, those materials that come naturally from fire and dust. “It’s a new way of looking at beauty,” said Ms Edelkoort. And dark, dramatic colours will be used in bathrooms to create a more sophisticated, hedonistic ambience. “Many bathrooms will include black, sometimes in combination with brass, to create a sense of luxury,” she said.
Kohler’s PVD tapware, including the modernist Purist and the vintage Artifacts collections, are the perfect fit for this look. Each is available in a range of ‘precious metals’ including brushed bronze, polished gold and rose gold. Purist, while inspired by vintage hand pumps, is the essence of simplicity and authenticity – a timeless design in either a single lever mixer or three piece basin set.
Artifacts is the antithesis of this – a collection of tapware that references the form and ornamentation of the Edwardian period, available in the deep, rich textures of oil-rubbed and vibrant brushed bronze. Each collection has matching accessories.
Dramatic stone or quartz surfaces in deepest black, bold charcoal or midnight grey will feature on benchtops, splashbacks, walls and floors, some in solid colour and others with sweeping, bold pattern and veining or smaller, homogeneous chips. Each will create a sense of visual daring and bold statement.
Back to black with basins
In keeping with this bold design are Kohler’s Petaline and Mica jet black basins – each a statement piece to provide perfect balance with the dramatic dark tones of the Caesarstone finishes. Petaline, inspired by a single petal, is a feat of engineering mastery in cast iron with black enamel finish. The 615mm long basin is counter-balanced to create a vision of elegance and seemingly impossible poise.
Mica, available in either square or round format, is a beautifully sophisticated and refined honed black countertop vessel with super slim walls – just 6mm – to give the appearance of extreme delicacy and understated style.
Edelkoort used some of Caesarstone’s quartz surfaces to demonstrate the look – such as Vanilla Noir, Piatra Grey and Night Sky – along with metal elements, such as brass, to further enhance the sense of luxury and indulgence that can be achieved.
