Get Big Ideas for Small Bathrooms

Got a small bathroom but don’t want to compromise on style and functionality? When it comes to designing for bathroom sizes – sometimes as little as two to three square metres – creating a classy, on-trend yet functional bathing space can be a challenge!

Here’s a project that faced the same challenge, with a few great ideas that made a huge difference to the family living in this home, in terms of both style and experience.

One of the most common desires of those with a small bathing space is the need for a bath, especially for families with children.

A bath was a “must have” in this bathroom, which turned an everyday bathroom into a luxurious master bathroom exuding sybaritic indulgence. This deeply relaxing hydrotherapy spa bath ticked all the boxes, and when paired with a mixture of Crystal Glass Loft Black subway tiles and large format black Mek Dark tiles, creates an Insta-worthy bathing space!

When designing your compact bathroom, the more floor area that is visible the greater the perception of space.  A wall hung vanity and toilet are both excellent inclusions to achieve this effect.

This bathroom features the innovative Terrace basin with matching wall mounted cabinet, incorporating spacious natural oak integrated storage drawers. Designed by the Jacob Delafon team in France, the Terrace includes the unique “Free Drain” system which is hands free drainage – no centre waste hole required, nor the need to put your hands into the water.

The unique FreeDrain concealed waste keeps your basin minimalist and streamlined.

Paired with the contemporary Avid basin mixer – a Red Dot award-winning tap – and matching Avid bathroom accessories, this bathroom is elevated to rock-star status.

When saving space is a priority, the toilet can be a key factor.  A wall-hung model, with cistern concealed in the wall cavity, will not only take less bathroom space but also creates more visual space by being elevated above the floor.  And for the seemingly impossible dream – having a bidet in a small bathroom – there IS a solution! The Veil Intelligent Wall Hung toilet is the perfect addition to the modern bathroom, featuring integrated bidet and comfort factors including heated seat, heated water wash with varying temperature levels, three wash functions, heated air-drying function, built in deodoriser and LED auto self-cleaning wand to name a few! What more could you want in a small bathroom!

So while space is definitely limited in a compact bathroom, your options for creating a stylish, highly functional bathing space are vast!

Luxurious bathroom reno exudes sophisticated styling with a masculine edge

Award-winning NZ designer Kelly Gammie, recognised for her love of colour and texture, recently completed a luxurious townhouse project for a busy professional couple. The home’s compact bathrooms showcase a clever use of bold granite with natural timbers.

The owners, while living in the inner city, wanted to incorporate their love of nature into their bathing space – the look was to be sophisticated while exhibiting a soft masculine edge.

Kelly chose large format moody, granite-look tiles as her starting point – her philosophy is that the WOW factor has to sit side by side with functionality for any bathroom to truly shine.

To prevent visual overload in the master bath, the vanity wall was finished in a solid ebony-brown tile with fixtures such as bath, back-to-wall toilet and vanity/basin in crisp white. Hand-blown glass pendant lights by Kate Brown complete the look in this bathroom.

Clean lines were essential for this richly textured bathroom to have visual impact while not overwhelming. Kohler’s Terrace Basin, with its beautiful rectilinear design and European Oak storage drawer, plus the brand’s Grande rimless toilet were the perfect fit. Tapware from Kohler included the semi industrial style Composed mixer – winner of this year’s Red Dot Design Award (2017) – plus the Memphis bath spout.

Kelly injected some defining black accents in the form of powder coated aluminium shutters and custom-made framed shower.

Details that count … choosing bathroom fittings

Details that count … choosing bathroom fittings

Renovating a bathroom? Or just wanting a quick, inexpensive refresh??

An eye for detail is key to both, especially when it comes to the smaller, more functional elements.

By choosing bathroom fittings – such as towel rails, soap dishes, toilet roll holders – that both match each other and complement existing tapware, there is a sense of cohesion and flow introduced to the space.

When renovating choose a tapware design that has matching fittings – the profiles of the towel rails and soap dish, for example, match those of the basin, bath and shower taps.

Kohler has numerous designs – from the very contemporary, simple lines of the Toobi (pictured above) and Loure collections to the more glamorous, vintage aesthetics of the Margaux range.

And for a quick refresh on an existing bathroom, choose some new bathroom fittings that reflect the general theme of the space – traditional or retro, minimalist or contemporary??

And even more importantly perhaps – select quality bathroom fittings that won’t tarnish or corrode. Kohler’s bathroom fittings are of solid brass construction with tarnish and corrosion-resistant bright chrome finish.
